“The desire for safety stands against every noble human endeavor.” -Tacitus

Jesus said it like this, those who seek to save their lives will lose it, but those who give up their life for me will find it. (Mt. 16:25 Jerry’s paraphrase)

Self preservation, the instinct goes beyond, food, shelter, and safety.  We want to save face, upward mobility, comfort, but scripture paints a distinctly different picture for the believer.

Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.””  (Mt. 8:19-20 NLT)

Ask yourself the question today, what is my present situation worth to me in light of eternity, what is my life, as I view it, worth in light of the death of Christ?

Then step way outside your comfort zone, and take on something God sized and God shaped.  Risk everything, and let me know how it goes.

Lord Jesus,

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves, when our dream have come true because we have dreamed too little, when we arrive safely because we have sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we posses, we have lost our thirst for the waters of life; having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity; and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture onto wider seas where storms will show your mastery; where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.  We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; and to push into the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.
